The Lady Raider
Varisty Softball team and the Meyersdale Girls Softball League were the recent
recipients of a $2,000 grant from the FPL Energy Meyersdale Wind Power Fund, administered
through the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies. Funds were used to
construct pitching lanes at the softball fields on the campus of the Meyersdale
Area School District. According to head coach, Jessica Deakins, this project
addressed and eliminated safety issues for players at all levels. "We
lacked a safe and contained area for our pitchers. These two lanes, located
between the two fields, are adjacent to the hitting cage and are on a raised
platform, covered by turf," she explained. "These lanes are a benefit
to all players who use our fields." Over the course of six years, more
than $15,000 has been invested in the softball complex, including improvements
to the benches, dug-outs, both fields were surfaced with sand and a concession
stand was built. This impressive investment has been made possible through
grants and donations.
