The Reading PLC (Professional Learning Community) program at MAES has scheduled a wide range of activities and events to celebrate Read Across America.
“Every year on March 2, schools across America celebrate the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. Meyersdale Area Elementary has opted to recognize RAA throughout the entire month of March with a variety of literacy activities that we hope will ignite a love for reading,” explained Gala Wassilchalk, a member of the PLC.
The Read Across America Planning Community includes Wassilchalk, Kathleen Emert, Stacy Kucenic and Lana Vena.
The official kick-off was held Friday, March 2. Students were given the opportunity to enjoy Seuss-themed foods at lunch and were encouraged to don Seuss-like apparel in the famous red and white theme.
To further encourage reading, students were given Readers’ Oath Bookmarks listing a series of reading activities for students to complete at home. If students complete the tasks and return the bookmark, they will receive a prize!

Throughout the month of March, students will be learning more about the life of Dr. Seuss in the library. Mrs. Kucenic will be helping preparing the students for the Seuss Trivia Quiz-off.
