MAES hosts Career Day
Throughout the day on May 30, Meyersdale Elementary students had an opportunity to meet a variety of professionals for the 2018 Meyersdale Elementary School Career Day.
This special program is a continuation of the curriculum and classes focusing on each student’s Career Portfolio. Program coordinator and Elementary Guidance Counselor Joey Emerick said Career Day helps students begin to think of career paths.
Emerick contacted parents asking for volunteers to come in to speak to the students about their respective careers. Presenters will include representatives from a wide range of careers, including public services, carpentry, engineering, realty, medicine, construction and many more
Emerick said the diversity of the careers to be presented is reflective of the many opportunities afforded to students, whether through a traditional four-year degree, technical training, as well as careers that do not require advanced degrees or training.
A total of 17 individuals will meet with students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. Students will rotate through the various classrooms, meeting each of the presenters. Students will then have lunch with their parents/guardians.
“Our goal is to expose students to the many careers in this area,” she explained. “We wanted a wide range of careers to present and our parents/families were wonderful about volunteering to come in and see our students. It’s important to show students there are many career paths they can follow and many options they can explore.”
This is the first year for this extensive of a program and Emerick said she hopes it sparks the interest of both students and adults.
“We have had such a enthusiastic response to this program and I hope to see it continue.”
