MAES to hold Walk-A-Thon
MEYERSDALE - THe Meyersdale Area Elementary Educational Boosters have planned an event that is sure to “get students on their feet and headed in the right direction!”
The first Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser will be an event for all students in ages K through fifth grade and is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3, with a rain date of October 4. The Walk-a-Thon will be held at the Meyersdale High School Track.
Students will be accepting sponsors for their efforts, as well as flat donations. Students in kindergarten and first grade will have 30 minutes to walk as many half-laps as they can. Older students, those in second through fifth grade, will have one hour to complete as many full laps as they are capable. The top earner from each grade will be treated to lunch with MAES Principal Pritts. Organizers have a set a fundraising goal of $5,000. If this goal is met, all students will receive an ice cream treat.
Money raised through sponsorship and/or donations will directly benefit students through the many programs and activities sponsored and supported by the boosters. These activities and events include: field trips, assemblies, Santa’s Store, summer family activities, family movie night, classroom supplies and much more.
According to Rene Hay, Treasurer of the Meyersdale Area Elementary Boosters, this event will replace the Cherrydale/Yankee Candle fundraiser held in years past.
“We thought it was time for a change and wanted to hold an event that gets our students excited about wellness and walking,” Hay explained. “We thought this would be a nice change from traditional fundraising sales and this will allow students to take ownership of their efforts. “
The Boosters hope to plan a similar event in the Spring and thank, in advance, families, friends and the community for their support of MAES activities and our very special students.
The Meyersdale Area Elementary Educational Boosters meet the third Monday of each month at 3 p.m. in the elementary forum. Family members of students, in grades K through fifth grade, are invited to attend and support this organization and their efforts.
