Oktoberfest to benefit Red Raider Marching Band
“Prost” or cheers! It’s Oktoberfest time again here in the Maple City. The Meyersdale Elks Lodge will once again be hosting this special event in support of the Red Raider Marching Band. This is the second year for this event and organizers promise it will be better than ever!
Oktoberfest will be held Saturday, October at the Meyersdale Elks Lodge. Doors open at 5 p.m. This exciting evening will offer good food, good music and lots of good fun for all those in attendance. Oktoberfest has become a tradition in Meyersdale and the Elks are proud to help continue this tradition.
Oktoberfest Chairman Kurt Woolslayer said hosting this event is a clear demonstration of the commitment the local Elks lodge has to its community and area youth.
“The Elks Motto is Elks Care, Elks Share. The band has helped with many of our lodge's projects like The Fish Fry during the Lent Season,” Woolslayer said, adding that Oktoberfest is a way to return the favor and support the marching band.
Katie Howard, Director Bands, said events such as this help the band continue its own tradition, one of excellence.
“The Elks' generosity is hugely beneficial to our band program. Instruments always need repaired, students need equipment, and right now we're looking at purchasing new raincoats to keep our kids dry in wet weather games. The fact that our Elks financially support the long-standing tradition of excellence in our band program isn't to be overlooked,” Howard explained. “We will have students and some band parents serving that evening as just a small token of our appreciation for their generosity. In an age of budget cuts, it's refreshing and very needed to have the community support for the arts that we are fortunate to have here in Meyersdale. We hope to have a great turn out that evening!”
Doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner will begin at 6 p.m., followed by music and dancing.
The menu will include German fare, such as bratwurst, kielbasa, pork and sauerkraut, German potato salad, mashed potatoes, spaetzle noodles, German chocolate cake.
Music will be provided by The Rhinelanders Band. The Rhinelanders, from Windber, play a variety of German Polkas and other ethnic dances and games to celebrate the Oktoberfest Season.
Games of chance will be offered throughout the evening as well as a basket raffle. The Band Boosters will be offering chances on a 50/50, baskets and some items donated to the band boosters for games of chance.
Woolslayer said this evening will be filled with “great German food, great German music, and is a great time to have fun with other members of the community.”
