MAHS plans benefit auction

Each year the Meyersdale Area School District hosts a Veterans Day Program in honor of local men and women who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces. This event has become a local tradition, loved by guests and attendees alike.

All Veterans are given a small gift as a token of appreciation for their service. To raise the needed funds for these gifts, FBLA and Student Council hold a benefit auction every three years. This year’s auction will be held March 29. Organizers are very excited to announce that the event will have a very special auctioneer - Mr. Smerbeck! Mr. Smerbeck is currently enjoying his first year of retirement but continues to hold the students at MAHS very near to his heart. Smerbeck’s return to the halls of MAHS promises to be entertaining!

Items for the auction are donated by local individuals, businesses and organizations. Members spent a day visiting local businesses asking for their support of this very special tradition.

According to Patti Shaulis, Student Council advisor, several businesses have already donated gifts and baskets to the event.

“I am in awe every time Veterans Day is mentioned in our community as well as our school district. People jump to help and support the cause. When the Veterans walk through the doors of MAHS we are honored and humbled. This is our way of giving back to them and we as a staff and also the students look forward to this honored event each year,” she explained.

Another new aspect to the auction will be another special appearance - representatives of Sheetz have generously donated hot dogs and all the tasty toppings to be sold prior to the auction. All proceeds from the sale of hot dogs and other concessions will also go towards the Veterans’ Day fund.

The continued support of our community, along with our faculty, staff and students, makes it possible for our local Veterans to be properly recognized for their selfless service and commitment to our great country.
