Students visit Fort Necessity

Members of the Meyersdale Middle School 8th grade class recently visited Fort Necessity and the site of the Battle of Jumonville, an important turning point in the history of our country. The trip, held May 21, was part of the students’ History unit and has been organized by Mr. Mike Swick for several years. Students visited the Mount Washington Tavern; enjoyed a presentation at the actual site of Georges Washington’s “Fort of Necessity;” participated in an interactive tour of the visitors’ center and learned how to create wampum, strands of beads used by Native Americans as currency and a way of communication. The trip was completely free, made possible by the Meyersdale Area School District and the National Parks Service.
