Graduation ceremony held for fifth grade
Spring is the time for endings and beginnings. For fifth grade students at Meyersdale Area Elementary School it is a time for both! On May 28, staff, family and friends watched as our fifth grade students ended one chapter of their lives and began another.
Organized by Ms. Carrie Long, Mrs. Mandy McNelly and Mrs. Beth Romesberg, Fifth Grade Graduation has become a school tradition, anticipated by students and staff alike.
“We feel that this ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to honor the 5th grade students and their achievements,” McNelly explained. “Also, it's important to recognize their time here in elementary school and their transition into the new chapter of their lives, middle school.”
After marching in, students took their respective places in the auditorium. Miss Mady Gillespie provided the welcome address.
MAES Principal Mr. Devin Pritts presented each student with their elementary diplomas. A variety of academic awards were also presented to students. Jordyn Miller was recognized as Salutatorian and Leaonca Fazenbaker was named Valedictorian.
A group of students, Kylie Haer, Emma Kretchman, Emily Broadwater, Richard Purbaugh, and Olivia Knopsnyder, Carrie Engle and Kendell Donaldson, sang “Forever Young,” by Bob Dylan, during the ceremony. These talented boys and girls were selected through an audition process in front of their peers. A second group of students performed “You Can Count on Me," by Bruno Mars to close the ceremony.
The program included a slide-show presentation featuring each student and his/her favorite memory. This compilation was made possible by Mrs. Angel Floyd, Mrs. Stacy Kucenic and Mrs. Sheri Trulick. Each student received a copy of this heartfelt tribute as a gift from their teachers.
