MAES celebrates with a carnival

Students at the the Meyersdale Elementary finished the school year the with a carnival - complete with bounce houses, snow cones and a dunking booth!

The event, sponsored and organized by the Meyersdale Area Educational Boosters, was held to celebrate the outstanding efforts of the students and to thank them for an exceptional year.

During this school year, several new fundraising initiatives were implemented and were met with such success, Boosters felt compelled to reward the students for their efforts.

“We decided to do this carnival to show kids what funds were raised by fundraising efforts and for a good year,” explained Rene Hay, Treasurer. “The Walkathon raised  over $13,000, the school mall during the holidays generated $900 and the Christmas Vendor Fair raised $920.”

Volunteers began the planning process more than three months ago and found a vendor, Hogue's Inflatables and Games, to help them make the carnival a truly unforgettable event.

On May 30, the Meyersdale Area Elementary School playground was transformed into a true carnival! The carnival included an inflatable castle, a human foosball inflatable game, an obstacle course, games and much more! The Meyersdale Area Educational Boosters purchased a bubble machine and two cornhole sets to add to the festivities.

One of the favorite activities offered were the snow cones and the dunk tank. One of the most popular “victims” of the dunk tank was Mr. Devin Pritts, MEAS Principal. Other dunk tank participants included: Mrs. Angie Benning, Mrs.Melissa Leasock, Mrs. Joey Emerick, and Mrs. Romesburg.

Hay said the success of the carnival was due to a true collaborative effort between staff, Boosters and parents, who volunteered their time.

“Staff felt it was an amazing experience for the kids,” she said. “We'll do it again next year provided that we have another successful Walkathon in the fall.”

“This was a great way to end the year. Students worked hard throughout the year and this was an awesome event to celebrate all their hard work,” explained Mr. Drevin Pritts.”We felt this event was a great way to celebrate our successful year which included our first walk-a-thon and our first year of PBIS. The students and faculty had all positive things to say about the carnival. We appreciate the Educational Boosters' support throughout the year. We hope to have many more successful years ahead!”

The Meyersdale Area Educational Boosters are active throughout the year, providing funding and equipment for special projects and events in and out of the classrooms. During the 2018-2019 school year, the Boosters provided $2,000 for field trips; $900 to special area classrooms; $900 to regular classrooms; $200 for the Meyersdale Elementary Reading Team; $1,500 on PBIS t-shirts for k-5; over $1,200 in special project requests by classroom teachers; $300 in book fair gift certificates for children completing summer boredom busters; and $700 in new playground basketball hoops and new toy purchases. These are just a few examples of the support offered to our students here at MAES.

Hay said the Boosters have already planned to host a similar carnival event to mark the beginning of the 2019-2020 year on “Back to School Fun Night” planned for 6 to 8 p.m. on August 6. In addition to Hogue's inflatables and games, Quiver Farms will return with their petting zoo and the playground shed will be open.

Carnival fun!
