Red Raider End Zone now available

The second edition of the Red Raider End Zone is hot off the press and bigger and better than ever! Published by the Meyersdale Red Raider Athletic Boosters, this full-color, perfect-bound program book features the Fall Red Raider sports teams - Varsity/JV Football, Volleyball, Cross Country and Cheerleaders; as well as the schedule of all teams for the 2019-2020 school year. New copies of the End Zone will be available at all Fall sporting events and proceeds benefit all of the Red Raider sporting events.

Each year, organizers hope to highlight an iconic team or individual who has made a significant and lasting impact on the Meyersdale Area School District. In the inaugural year, the End Zone featured Coach Dennis “Butch” Stahl. This year, the historic and impressive coaching career of Mr. Donald Shockey is featured in the edition.

Mr. Shockey discovered his passion for sports and teaching at a young age. As the son of a teacher, he knew the value of an education but he found his true direction on the football field. Encouraged by a coach in high school, Shockey discovered the confidence and a drive to further his education and continue to play football beyond high school. Shockey attended California University of Pennsylvania to pursue his teaching degree and play football. In 1959, he began a 34-year career at the Meyersdale Area School District. Shockey had many impressive teams during his tenure as assistant coach of the Red Raider football program but is especially proud of the 1963 undefeated Red Raiders. He said he was proud to have been one of Charlie Banks’ coaches. Banks is among the most decorated and accomplished football players in Somerset County history.

In the classroom, Shockey taught Biology, Physical Science and Chemistry. He is known far and wide for his annual “Leaf Project.” Students continue to approach him and share their own tales of the famous “leaf project.” Shockey taught at MAHS until 1993 when he retired to spend more time with his family and travel.

“The interactions I had with the kids on the field and in the classroom were my favorite things as a coach and teacher. I always treated my students with respect and how I would want to be treated,” Shockey said. “I really enjoyed my years here, I was tough but I hope I had a positive impact.”

That impact is just one of many reasons, Mr. Shockey was selected to be featured in this year’s End Zone

“The Red Raider End Zone is a project that means so much to me. I love that it helps and supports the athletes, but it also promotes our local businesses,” explained Patti Shaulis, Meyersdale Athletic Boosters Treasurer. “The history section of the book has sentimental value to me as I was taught by both Mr. Dennis (Butch) Stahl and Mr. Donald Shockey, both great educators and mentors of Meyersdale Area High School.”
