Latest edition of the Red Raider End Zone is now available

The third edition of the Red Raider End Zone  is now available. Following months of uncertainty and restrictions, the Red Raider End Zone is the perfect way to connect with our Red Raider athletes and follow our favorite sports teams.

Published by the Meyersdale Red Raider Athletic Boosters, this full-color, perfect-bound program book features the Fall Red Raider sports teams - Varsity/JV Football, Volleyball, Cross Country and Cheerleaders; as well as the schedule for all teams for the 2020-2021 school year.

The 2020-2021 Red Raider End Zone features not one but three outstanding educators/coaches who left an indelible mark on generations of Red Raiders. In the inaugural year, the End Zone featured Coach Dennis “Butch” Stahl. The second edition featured Mr. Don Shockey. Organizers are excited to highlight Mr. John Smaila, Mr. Bill McDonough and Mr. Mike Miller.

“We are so proud to highlight Mr. Smaila and honor the memories and work of Mr. McDonough and Mr. Miller. These three men did so much for our school,” Shaulis explained.

Mr. Smaila joined the staff at MASD in 1972. During his 33-year career as a Red Raider, Smaila taught Spanish, Social Studies, Civics, Problems of Democracy, Economics, and even a year of Commercial English! His dedication to students extended far beyond the classroom, Smaila coached Junior High, Junior Varsity and Varsity High School Football, as well as Wrestling. In 1991, Smaila took over the role as Athletic Director.

Just one year after joining the staff, Smaila organized the school’s first girls softball team. He served as Head Coach for the next 10 years. His vision to create and foster this program is evident today, as the Lady Raiders Softball team continues to flourish.

In each of his coaching roles, Smaila enjoyed great success, but is reluctant to highlight the success of one individual team or athlete. He said his greatest success was realized when a student came to him and said he helped them grow up.

“That is my success. We had a lot of impressive teams and athletes, but helping a student grow up and be a successful adult was all I could ask for,” he said. “That is the ultimate accolade.”

This year’s Red Raider End Zone also honors the memories of Mr. Bill McDonough and Mr. Miller. Each year, a special event is held in the memory of  these fine men. The McDonough/Miller Raider Spirit Fun Run 5K is held annually in the fall as a testament to the impact these fine men had on the athletic programs at MASD and countless Red Raiders.

Mr. McDonough joined the faculty at MAHS in 1968, where he taught Social Studies for 35 years. He began to share that love of the sport with students first as an assistant to Head Coach Gary Bernardo and then as Head Coach until his retirement. McDonough retired in 2003 and true to his character and desire to help others, he remained active in his community, serving as a PIAA track official and driver for the RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program). McDonough passed away, at the age of 63, in 2009, after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. The McDonoughs were married for 36 years and have a son, Patrick. Patrick and his wife, Ashley, have four children.

Mr. Mike Miller was a dedicated teacher and coach, serving the District for more than 24 years. Miller was just 49 when he passed away in 2009. Miller taught middle school math and computers for more than 24 years at Meyersdale. During his time at MASD, Miller also served as a coach for Girls Basketball.

Miller’s passion for the sport was reflected in his commitment to the athletic programs at MAHS. Miller started the girls track program at MAHS and helped lead many student athletes to State competition during his tenure. He and McDonough shared a passion for the sport and helped create a program that was competitive and life-changing for many students. The Girls Track and Field team celebrated their first Somerset  County Championship in 1994, and continued to defend their title each year through 2003. The team also earned the distinction of WestPAC champions in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

All proceeds from the McDonough/Miller Fun Run benefit the “Stride with Pride” scholarship, which recognizes a Meyersdale Area High School graduating senior who excelled in track and field as well as academics during his or her tenure at MAHS. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, October 3, at 9:30 a.m.  Please consider attending this special event and join us as we continue to honor the legacy of Mr. Williiam McDonough and Mr. Michael Miller.
