2020 Stockings for Soldiers
MEYERSDALE - Following a most successful year in 2019, the administration, faculty, staff and students at Meyersdale Area School District have decided to hold the annual Stockings for Soldiers once again! In a year filled with uncertainty and unfortunate developments, organizers felt it more important than ever to share the holiday spirit with the brave young men and women from this area serving in the United States Armed Forces.
For more than six years, the District has been holding an annual food drive for soldiers. These items are boxed up and sent to men and women deployed throughout the world. After speaking to several recipients, event organizers Tammy Hetrick and Ginger Geiger, tailored the program to better meet the needs of soldiers. They expanded the program to send greetings to all service members from Somerset County and added items so that recipients could share their “holiday greetings” with their fellow soldiers.
“Stockings for Soldiers is one of my favorite projects that we do here at Meyersdale School District. As a military mom, I remember all too well those first holidays that my son wasn’t able to spend at home with our family. I think that often we take those family moments for granted and that we forget there are service members who either do not have a support system or are just unable to spend the holidays with family due to serving this Nation. Throw COVID travel restrictions in there as well, and this can make the holidays almost unbearable for service personnel who crave interaction with family and friends,” Hetrick said. “Stockings for Soldiers is a way for us from home to reach out in an expression of gratitude for their service and to show compassion for their sacrifice. The extra stocking that is enclosed in each box is to share with another battle buddy that may need the support as well.
If you have a loved one currently serving and would like to add them to the list, please send their names and addresses to the Meyersdale School District via email at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline to submit names is November 23, this ensures that packages can be shipped in time for Christmas.
The items requested for the Stockings for Soldiers Drive includes the following items: puzzle books, magazines, card games, candy canes, individually wrapped hard candy, bubble gum, protein, granola and breakfast bars, sunflower seeds, trail mix, individual cookie or pretzel packets, beef jerky, single packet flavored drink mixes, and personal care items, such as shaving cream, razors, deodorant, chapstick and sunscreen. Donations are also being accepted to help defer the growing costs of postage.
A homeroom competition has been set up for students in grades six through 12. The homeroom bringing in the most donations, monetary and items, will receive a pizza party for their efforts!
This annual event is dear to the hearts of many, including Geiger. She said it is an honor to be able to reach out to area young men and women who are sacrificing so much for their country.
“I am so grateful for the men and women who serve this great country. Your courageous acts, support and kindness do not go unnoticed. God Bless."
Community donations may be brought to the Meyersdale Area High School office or sent with a student. If you would like to submit a name of a local soldier please contact Ginger Geiger at email@example.com. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please contact Tammy Hetrick at 814-634-1437 X338 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please consider helping us spread the holiday spirit to our brave men and women serving during the Christmas season and help us with Stockings for Soldiers!
