MASD to honor local Veterans

MEYERSDALE -   The Meyersdale Area School District  will be honoring area veterans with a special event on November 11. While the event will not have the same pageantry as in previous years, the pride and respect our District has for our Veterans is greater than ever.

“The Meyersdale Area School District is proud to carry on the tradition of honoring our local veterans and those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for serving our country.  Our school community will not allow COVID to rob us of paying tribute to these brave men and women who have served and sacrificed and have overcome great obstacles.  The honor and reward of giving back to those that gave all is truly that of the Meyersdale Area School District, our students, staff, faculty, and administration,” John Wiltrout, MAHS Principal. “As I have stated many times, our Veterans Day program, although a solemn occasion, is one of the best days of the year at MAHS.”

Organizers have planned an event that honors veterans while following COVID-19 protocol to ensure the health and safety of veterans, as well as students, faculty and administration.

Veterans and those actively serving are united to a drive-thru luncheon event from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the Meyersdale Area High School parking lot. Veterans will be greeted by members of the Meyersdale Red Raider Marching Band who will be playing patriotic tunes upon the arrival of our honored guests. Students will line the sidewalks with banners, flags and posters. Veterans will be given a boxed meal, consisting of a turkey wrap, potato chips, dessert and a drink.

Following the meal pick-up, Veterans will be led on a procession past the Meyersdale Elementary by representatives of the Meyersdale Borough Police and the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department. The procession will then go through the town of Meyersdale.

The Meyersdale Area School District is asking local residents and businesses to join this tribute by assembling on the streets for the procession and decorating for Veteran’s Day with flags and banners.

Veterans planning to attend are required to make reservations by calling 634-1437 ext. 338 or 634-8311 ext. 323 by November 6. Veterans meals are free and additional meals are just $3. Reservations must be made.
