MAHS plans graduation ceremonies

MEYERSDALE  - The Meyersdale Area High School graduating class of 2021 has endured and successfully completed a school year that has proven to be unusual to say the very least. However, while their year may have looked chaotic and difficult, organizers are excited to give them a graduation that represents the traditions MAHS classes have come to treasure.

As with tradition, the Class of 2021 will be the honored guests at a student-organized Baccalaureate service on Thursday, June 3; followed by Commencement on Saturday, June 5. The MAHS Class of 2021 will include 76 students.

Baccalaureate, planned and organized by members of the Class of 2021 will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 3. Gabe Yoder, Senior Pastor at the Summit Mills Grace Brethren Church, will be the guest speaker. Yoder is a 2013 MAHS graduate. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and Biblical Studies from Lancaster Bible College in 2017. Since 2017, Yoder has been serving at Summit Mills Grace Brethren Church as Youth Pastor, and now as Senior Pastor. Yoder will share a message entitled “Unashamed of the Gospel.” The program will also include special readings and music.   Class of 2021 President Karlee Witherite will provide the welcome address. Her fellow class officers, Olivia Miller, Vice-President; Dawson Rough, Treasurer; and Brycen Sechler, Secretary, will lead their classmates in prayers, scriptures and readings.

Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m.  Commencement will be held at the Red Raider stadium. Because of recent changes to Covid restrictions, the number of guests permitted to attend will not be restricted. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held indoors with limited capacity.

Following the Commencement ceremony, students, family and friends are invited to participate in a parade in honor of the Class of 2021. Members of the local fire departments and police departments will lead the procession throughout the community. Stewart's Transportation will provide a bus for students who would like to ride through the process for “one last bus ride!”

The guest speaker for commencement will be Elizabeth (Miller) Sayor, MAHS Class of 1998. She is the daughter of Wayne L. Miller, Jr. and Vicky Wiltrout Vreeland, both 1973 graduates of Meyersdale Area High School. She is married to her husband of 16 years, Benjamin Saylor, a 1994 graduate of Somerset Area High School. The couple resides in a suburb of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with their daughter Zoey.

Saylor serves as in-house counsel for TE Connectivity, a global industrial technology leader that has approximately 80,000 employees and sells its products into approximately 140 countries. She began her legal career in private practice, gaining a focus in family law, mediation and collaboration. She transitioned in-house, first with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, supporting the contracts, compliance and litigation arms of the legal division, and then with Capital BlueCross, supporting the compliance division.

“We were pleasantly surprised and pleased to learn that capacity restrictions have been lifted in time to celebrate the Class of 2021. We are happy to be able to offer our graduates a traditional celebration in light of the challenges they have faced and overcome,” John Wiltrout, MAHS Principal. “We have an outstanding group of students who have shown true integrity, character and resilience throughout what has been a challenging year. We are so proud of them and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”
