Anderson honored by Soroptimists

Jaylynn Anderson, a junior at Meyersdale Area High School, was recently honored by the Soroptimists of Somerset County for her outstanding volunteerism and commitment to her community. Jaylynn is the daughter of Rebekah and Jason Anderson.

“The Soroptimist of Somerset County has a project called Soroptimist Juniors and recognizes a girl in her junior year of high school that excels in volunteerism in her community. One girl is chosen from each of the schools in the county, and she is selected by her guidance counselor. This year, the Soropotimist honored eleven girls. Each recipient was invited to attend a recognition dinner to speak about their volunteerism efforts in their local community and how they planned to continue volunteering in the future,” explained Juliann Ansell, President. “At the end of the evening, each girl received a small gift and a $100 donation to the organization of their choice.”

Jaylynn said this award was a true honor for something she so enjoys doing - volunteering!

She said her volunteer work includes time as a junior firefighter with the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department, where she also assists at fundraisers and special events. She is also a dedicated volunteer for the Pennsylvania Maple Festival, where she has volunteered at Maple Manor, the Sugar Shack and Country Store.

In addition to volunteering in her community, Jaylynn is a member of service organizations at MAHS, including Student Council and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). Her other school activities include the school musical, Envirothon, Prom Committee and the Red Raider Rifle Team. Her attributes are also exemplary in the classroom, as Jaylynn has been recognized several times as a Remarkable Raider and student of the Month.

Jaylynn said she admires the work of the organization, “The Soroptimist group is an organization of volunteers that are devoted to helping women and young women through their journey of success. They help women all over the world!”

“I am so honored that I was recognized for my volunteer work, and was happy to attend the meeting in Somerset and tell them about my volunteer work over the years,” she explained.

Jaylynn said the award was made even more meaningful when she was able to present the $100 donation to her organization of choice - the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department.
